Many students transitioning from Class 10 to Class 11 assume that NEB GPA is a simple arithmetic average of grade points. However, the National Examinations Board uses a credit-hour weighted system where subjects with higher weekly instructional hours carry greater mathematical weight.
1. The Standard NEB Credit Hour Distribution
In standard +2 streams (Science, Management, Law, Humanities), subjects are allocated specific credit hours:
- Compulsory English: 4 Credit Hours (128 working hours)
- Compulsory Nepali: 3 Credit Hours (96 working hours)
- Social Studies / Compulsory Mathematics: 5 Credit Hours (160 working hours)
- Optional Subjects 1, 2, and 3: 5 Credit Hours each (160 working hours each)
- Total Academic Load: 27 Credit Hours
2. The Weighted Grade Point Formula
To compute overall GPA, each subject's Grade Point (GP) is multiplied by its Credit Hour to determine the Weighted Grade Point (WGP):
Overall NEB GPA = (Σ Subject WGPs) ÷ (Total Credit Hours = 27)
3. Concrete Example
Consider a Class 12 student with the following results:
- English (4 Cr, Grade A / 3.6 GP): 4 × 3.6 = 14.4
- Nepali (3 Cr, Grade B+ / 3.2 GP): 3 × 3.2 = 9.6
- Physics (5 Cr, Grade A / 3.6 GP): 5 × 3.6 = 18.0
- Chemistry (5 Cr, Grade A+ / 4.0 GP): 5 × 4.0 = 20.0
- Mathematics (5 Cr, Grade A / 3.6 GP): 5 × 3.6 = 18.0
- Computer Science (5 Cr, Grade A+ / 4.0 GP): 5 × 4.0 = 20.0
Sum of WGPs = 14.4 + 9.6 + 18.0 + 20.0 + 18.0 + 20.0 = 100.0.
Overall Weighted GPA = 100.0 ÷ 27 = 3.70 GPA.
